A New House

So yesterday we went looking at a new house. It was a lot bigger house (an extra 1100 square feet!) with an immaculate beautiful .48 acre lot. I was excited to look at it because it had 8 bedrooms plus an office! It would be so perfect!

As we walked into the house though, immediately I could tell that the house was not for us. Not only did it have carpet damage throughout the entire house (from a dog!), but it wasn’t kept up well, and frankly, it just wasn’t “us”. When we moved into our present house I also didn’t really feel like the house was really “us” either- but there wasn’t another one with enough bedrooms, and that’s the one we took.

After coming home, I raced downstairs to see how the installers were doing with our new carpet in the basement. We had spent several of the previous days cleaning everything off the floor, and then giving our basement a whole new paint job. With our brand new carpet laid down, and the freshly painted walls, the downstairs looked amazing! I absolutely love it!

From top to bottom now (and all within the last couple months!) we have re-painted and re-carpeted the entire house, and there is new carpet throughout- all in our colors! All of our kids have a new bedroom- they wanted to try something new out- and I still (for now) get to keep the bedroom I’m using as an office. (I’m thrilled!) Our house is working. It’s our colors, and it has finally become “us”.

It feels like a brand new house. Unless we have a reason to otherwise, I think we’ll just stay put a while longer…

A Quick Summer Update

So last week, my boys were gone for Scout Camp. This week my two oldest were gone at Girl’s Camp. I am excited that they will be coming home today. I am ready to just have the family be home again! Yay!

Musically, I haven’t done very much. Summer’s are just more busy with kids. I like it that way though. It’s a good chance to just focus on them. This summer has been a little more crazy with all that has happened in the last 2 weeks. We will be getting new carpet for our basement put in -in a week!!! I’m excited that insurance will be paying for most of it, but we have LOTS to do to get ready for it!

If anyone is curious, I did take some time to make a profile on the new Mormon.org website. I really like how the website is laid out. You can read my profile at: http://www.mormon.org/me/165M-eng/

Hope everyone is having a great Summer!

Looking for Blessings amid the Trials

So, this last week started off with a flood of water in our basement. Apparantly there was a mechanical pencil that had made it’s way into our main pipe, and we were getting some nasty sewer water back flooding into our utility closet. My husband had left for scout camp literally 3 hours before this happened, and I was at a total loss to know how to handle the situation.

I sloshed down there, and took off the drain cover to the main pipe, and managed to pull out a ton of toilet paper from the backside of the drain. Within 15 minutes, the waters started to recede back down the drain, but the damage had been done, and our carpet was ruined.

It wasn’t fair. Why do these things always seem to hit the second my husband leaves? Knowing this is how it usually goes, I had actually put my home teacher on alert, just in case something happened. Did I call it or what?!

My church ward is amazing. The Relief Society president, and close friend and neighbor, organized a rescue party. She personally came over and ripped out all the wet carpet in the hallways! When the men came to help, there wasn’t much more for them to do! I felt so loved though….

This morning we had the insurance inspector come out and look at it. He could see that we had been looking at carpet samples to replace the part that the water had damaged. I was having a really hard time deciding what to do, since I didn’t like the carpet that was down there, but we needed it to match it to what was already there…. Well, this morning he told us that they would replace ALL the carpet in our basement! I am so excited! This will mean new carpet for our entire house! (We recently replaced our upstairs carpet…. check older blogs for details….) What a blessing!

I still wonder what I’m supposed to be learning from this experience. Will we be moving, and now our house will look more beautiful to sell? Am I just supposed to learn how to deal with insurance people, repair men, and taking out carpet?

The thing I’ve learned so far is what an awesome ward family I have. Yesterday, I was going to take the kids all to a park, and as we were pulling out of the driveway, 3 women (from my church ward) pulled up beside me and asked, “Did you know you have a flat tire?” “No!” I said as I got out of the car. I just laughed. I mean how many “guy” things was I supposed to deal with in one week! But, immediately I realized what a blessing it was to find out right then. We were home. My oldest was able to watch the kids in our air conditioned house- (think about how it could have been!). One of the women who stopped, called her husband who came over and tried to get the spare tire out from under the van. (I hadn’t even seen it there before!) It was too rusted to get off. My neighbor from across the street came over, and had a portable pressurized air filler pump thingy. He filled up the tire for me, and gave me directions to the nearest “Discount Tires” shop. Apparantly they fix and rotate tires for free! They were amazing too- I would highly recommend their shop.

Anyway, it’s been a neat week of trials, and opportunities to see love and kindness shown to our little Kerby family. What a blessing. I’m happy. I just hope I can get through the next trial to see what blessing is in store for us next!

My new calling

I don’t think I’ve mentioned here yet that I received a new calling… I get to play the piano for my church’s children’s program (Primary). Yes it’s my third calling, but my biggest concern was just that my baby wasn’t quite nursery age. They were happy to let him in a little early.

With the busyness of summer and having all my kids at home, it’s very rare that I even have a minute anymore to just sit and play the piano. Being the pianist actually allows me to do just that- Yay! My favorite times are when I can just play whatever I want as the children are coming in or out. Something soothing and quiet. It’s been nice.

I’m also enjoying my choir calling. We got to start learning one of my very favorite choral pieces, “Consider the Lillies” by Roger Hoffman. It is really beautiful, and our choir is very talented and has been able to pick it up pretty quickly. This is the first choir I’ve led where our men section is even stronger than our women. We need some more women singers! =)

I did have a minute to just sit at my piano for a few minutes today and play. For our Family Home Evening night last night, I was the “talent”, so I had played several melodies into my keyboard, using a different “voice” from the orchestra each time. It turned out pretty well, especially with just the few minutes I had to prepare. I haven’t had a lot of inclination to write anything lately, but it did feel really good to play around for a bit longer today.

I have a new piano song to share (it’s been done for a few months now) but I still haven’t gotten it notated. I ordered a new cord for my keyboard so I can connect it to my computer. There was a problem with the last one, and I’ve had to wait over 3 months for the new one (rediculous!) Anyway, I’m hoping it will work, and I’ll be able to notate the song soon. I’m anxious to share it with all of you!

Summer Fun

With my kids out of school now, I’ve had to try and plan some fun activities to keep my kids from getting bored for the summer. We decided that each day we would do an extra “work” activity (this has included things like setting up and cleaning out our pool, cleaning out the drawers and cupboards in each of the bathrooms, sorting through clothes drawers, etc) and then each day we do something fun. So you can get a rough idea of what we do, we plan a “Movie Day” – (either renting something from RedBox and watching it at home with popcorn, or going to the dollar movie theater), a “Park Day” – (discovering a new and different park each week in our neighborhood), a “Sports Day” – (taking the kids somewhere to do a sport, like tennis, badmitton, frisbee golf, volleyball, swimming, etc), a “Library and Craft Day” – (we make a trip to the library, and I have one of my children in charge of organizing a craft for the others), and a special “trip” day.

Last week I decided for our “trip” day, that I would take the kids on a hike. I picked a short trail that one of my daughters had gone on for a young women’s activity. She told us there was a beautiful waterfall at the end of the hike.

We drove to a little parking lot that was near the bottom of the trail. At the very beginning was a huge staircase that seemed to go on forever. There was some greenery at times, but most of it was uncovered, and my legs hurt a little bit even as we started going up. I was a little worried that this might be too difficult of a hike for my little ones.

Once we got to the top of the stairway, we found ourselves back in a residential area where the road continued to go uphill, but not as steeply. (They just didn’t want visitors parking on their streets…) We continued walked upwords along the road until finally we found the trail marker that again led us back to the designated path. Stairs were again part of the trail, but there wasn’t so many, and it quickly turned into a nice wooded terrain. Further on, the landscape changed a bit to rocky, and the kids discovered some neat caves and rock formations. As we continued up the steep path, we marveled at the beauty around us. Finally at the top, was a beautiful waterfall.

We had a lot of fun, some of us wished our hike had been a little longer. It was only about a ¼ of a mile!

Reflecting on the journey, it’s easy to see how our hike was a lot like our journey in life. Sometimes it seems like we’re faced with steep stairways that lead upwords, and we wonder if we’ll make it through. Sometimes we are on a plateau, back in familiar territory but wondering where to find our path again.

I love it when I know I’m on the path. It was fun to get to the part where I could hear the water and I knew we were close. The waterfall was beautiful. It was worth all the pain and effort to get there. I wonder if maybe when we get to the other side, if we’ll think about this road of life and talk about how short it was. I’m sure that we’ll get there and say how worth it everything was!

Getting Older

This last week I celebrated my 18th wedding anniversary! I got married when I was 18… That puts it a little into perspective!

My husband and I went to Park City so we could celebrate. We left the kids with Grandma, and really enjoyed ourselves. We went up to a really neat place called “The Canyons”, where we rode a gondola up to a high peak of the mountain. At the top, we got off and hiked and played frisbee golf. I’m not very good with a frisbee, (and we almost lost it once), but it was one of the most fun dates I’ve ever had. I love being out in nature.

My husband and I outside of the gondola, getting ready to head back

On Sunday, we went to a church there in Park City. Pretty amazing when we found ourselves sitting behind the family we usually sit behind in our home ward. Crazy- we were both vacationing at the same spot!

While we were sitting there, I noticed my first gray hair. Yes, I probably had one before now, but I’ve been careful not to look too hard before this. I was a little disappointed it was so easy to find.

Later, in our Relief Society class, I sat next to another visitor (on their honeymoon) she was amazed that we were celebrating our 18th wedding anniversary. Someone on the other side of me asked if we had any children. (Love that question!) I always love to see the reaction when I tell them I have 7. At any rate, I was not disappointed and the lady was shocked, telling me that I still looked like a teenager! (I don’t think so, but thank you anyway!)

It was a fun trip. And now I can say that I have been married longer than I have been single…. Must be getting older.

On this Father’s Day

Download “On This Father’s Day MP3″

This last week, someone emailed me and asked me if I could write a Father’s Day song that she could sing next year (I didn’t have any Father’s Day songs previously). I’ve wanted to write a song for Father’s, but it’s been a difficult request. It’s hard to write a song that could apply to most father’s. This is my attempt to write one. It’s a little late for this Father’s Day, but maybe some of you might still enjoy listening to it this year. (Sheet music will be coming soon!)

My Quilt

A few weeks ago, I got the idea to make a quilt to go in my purple room. Before I had children, (and I was bored waiting for my first one to be born…) I bought a quilt book, and made a queen size pieced together quilt. I love it still, but I also remember how long it took me.

I decided this time to try and make it easy for myself. I thought I would use big squares, and make the pattern for myself so I could keep it simple.

I went to Walmart and bought 3 different colors of fabric. When I had time again, I took pictures of each of my fabrics. I actually imported them each into a graphics program I have (made for scrapbooking) and created my own quilt! It wasn’t too hard, and it was actually fun!
!My pattern

I sized it up to the actual size of the quilt that I wanted, so I could figure out the exact dimensions of each square or rectangle. I figured out how many of each squares I would need, and cut the number needed. I got off a little, but thankfully it all worked out. (I bought a little extra material thinking I would make some big pillows to go with it)

Finally, today, I got around to sewing all the squares together. I did it all day today, but I finished! Yay! Doesn’t it look pretty! The Finished Quilt Top

Getting Organized

Tonight I went to a Relief Society activity. It was all about getting organized. There were some really terrific ideas given. My favorite ideas that I wanted to try were:

1) Putting all my telephone lists, children’s friend information, POISON CONTROL (and other numbers) all in a binder… easy to find! (I currently just have a list pinned to my cork board, but kids keep taking it down!!! I’m excited about this idea.

2) Putting my recipes in a binder. Just putting the recipes I USE in plastic folders. Not only does it keep food from getting all over my recipes, it’s easier to find recipes I want to use, and get rid of ones I don’t. (Yay!)

3) I’ve always been pretty good at scheduling my time, but I want to start going over the week schedule with my FAMILY on Sunday night. This way we can make sure the whole family knows what the plan is, at the same time, I can plan dinners and meal plans depending on our schedule for that week! (It’s brilliant!!!)

4) I’m going to put all my warranties AND THEIR MANUALS in a binder. Each page can have the warranty, manual, receipt, instructions, ETC right there! I may even alphabetize them, so it’s easy to find what I’m looking for (Example Dishwasher starts with “D”)

5) The last thing I was really excited about was how this lady put together little books for her children for each school year. She lets them pick their favorite 10 things to keep, then she makes a really cute cover and back and binds it all together with their school picture and grade (ex. Kindergarten) on the front. It’s inexpensive, and won’t take up so much space (I currently have BOXES of stuff for each of my kids!) Plus, my kids love to look at their school stuff, and this would be a way they actually could! (Right now it’s kind of off limits or they’ll mess it all up…)

I’m excited to try some of these ideas….

Anyone else have great organizing ideas to share?

Baptism Day

Today my daughter was baptized. It’s my 5th child to get baptized and I was so proud of her.

Baptism Day

There was a musical number that was sung by a mother and a daughter. They sang, Sally DeFord’s “If the Savior Stood Beside Me”. The duet was beautiful. I love musical numbers that bring in the spirit.

Before the Baptism

We took some pictures. This is one of the first family pictures we’ve taken with all 7 of our kids. I’m the one with the bangs flipping all over…
